The Aven d'Orgnac
The discovery of Aven d'Orgnac was made less than a century ago
Gigantic underground rooms, which arouse great admiration, bear witness to the formation of limestone rocks 100 million years ago
An exceptional visit
The Aven d'Orgnac is one of the most important caves in Europe by its size and the richness of its concretions and it is one of the most visited caves in France. The fascinating exploration takes visitors up to 120 m underground, via a staircase of 720 steps. The ascent is done by an elevator ... phew!
Several rooms, always more gigantic, allow to approach all kinds of wonders. We gradually discover, and thanks to the careful lighting, incredible “stacks of plates”, a forest of “palm trees”, a sumptuous “organ buffet”, majestic draperies and, finally, a red room which owes its color with ferruginous clay. A sound and light show concluded the visit 120 meters underground.
Prehistory City
Housed in a contemporary building surrounded by beautiful landscaped terraces, the permanent exhibition offers exemplary museography: touch screens, interactive terminals, models and reconstructions mark out a route that is both chronological and thematic, allowing you to discuss in detail the daily life of men from the Paleolithic to the Iron Age.
